They are tiny, they are disgusting, they can literally make your skin crawl like nothing else in the world can, and they are relentless. Just in case you have no clue as to what I am talking about, let me fill you in, I am talking about fleas. If you have ever encountered an infestation of fleas, you know exactly what I am talking about. They jump from place to place wreaking havoc where ever they land. When they attack they attack with a vengeance, and they have no sympathy for any of their victims. They are just mean, nasty, and it only takes a few of them to turn your yard and your household into a feeding ground.
Fleas Can Make You Physically Ill
Every knows how aggravating fleas can be. We reach for rubbing alcohol as soon as we feel their pinch, and we itch for hours if not days after we are bitten, but did you know that fleas can make you physically ill? Fleas can carry and spread plague, typhus, and cat scratch fever to humans. The most common of these diseases that domestic animals pass on to their human counter parts is Cat Scratch Disease, which is bacterial in nature, and is caused by Bartonella henselae. Anyone with a weakened immune system has to be extremely careful because they would have more of a risk of contracting the disease. Although the infection itself rarely causes disease in cats, it easily makes human beings sick, because fleas leave their droppings on the fur of the cat or on their claws, and then the cat spreads the infection to humans through a scratch, lick, or a bite.
How to Minimize Your Risk
The best way to keep yourself and your family safe form flea bites and the diseases that they carry is good flea control. That however is easier said than done if you are someone that lives in an apartment or in a condo. People who live in single family homes can treat their animals for fleas by using one of the many products that they can purchase from their veterinarian to put directly on their cat or dog every month. They can also control fleas by bathing their pets regularly, and finally they can sign up with a local pest control company to have their yards treated on a regular basis. People who live in Apartments or condos have to hire professional Apartment Exterminators. Condos and Apartments are set up and designed differently than a single family home and because of the fact the units are connected, it would not be effective to treat one unit and not all of the rest, or at the very least the surrounding units. Fleas are a nuisance, and the most important take away from all of this is if there is one, there are a thousand, so when you see one, put your plan to get rid of them into action immediately.
