San Antonio, Texas’s second-largest city, has a lot to offer visitors, from fine art museums to historical sites to amusement parks and more. The downtown area is lively and there are excellent restaurants as well as a vibrant nightlife.
If you are visiting San Antonio during the summer, you want to keep in mind how brutally hot Texas can be. In the summertime, the city of San Antonio is sweltering with high temperatures and stifling humidity. Being out in the sun for part of the day can be fun, but after a couple of hours you will be looking for ways to cool down.
Here are a few ideas for beating the heat on a hot and sunny San Antonio day:
The Witte Museum
San Antonio is home to some of the best museums in Texas. The Witte Museum is one of them. This museum has a great collection of local art, travelling exhibits and more. It’s a fun and interactive place for kids to learn about science and art. Best of all, it is pleasantly cool and air-conditioned.
Kids will be able to make their own movie, learn how a weather lab works and even create music. Children under three get free admission to the museum.
Escape into another air-conditioned oasis at the Mexican market known as The Mercado. Located in the heart of the city, the Mercado and the old farmer’s market are a fun place for shopping where you can find everything from vanilla extract to Puebla dresses and piñatas. In the center, there will is live music on the weekends, such as singers or flamenco dancers. Why not stop for lunch at Mi Terra and enjoy the sounds of the Mariachi band?
The Majestic Theater
This gorgeous old theater is known for being one of the most ornate of its kind. It was built in 1929 and was the biggest theater in Texas for many years as well as the second biggest theater in the country. The theater was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. It was also the first theater in Texas to have air conditioning. This makes it a popular attraction in the summer.
The Majestic Theatre is the home of the San Antonio Symphony. If you want to catch a performance during your visit, you can look at their website for show times. The theater also often showcases musicals, concerts and other performances throughout the year.
The Natural Bridge Caverns
Another great way to beat the heat on a hot San Antonio day is to go underground. The Natural Bridge Caverns are outside of San Antonio. They are a fascinating natural phenomenon. You can take a guided tour down the walkways through the stalactites and rock formations.
These are only some ways that you can beat the heat during your summer trip to San Antonio and enjoy the cooler side of this great city.
